Volume 1 — Where It Started
Cats, Dogs & Critters with Tales was originally going to be one book, a single collection bringing together the animal poems and stories I had written.
Then I started assembling the manuscript.
There was more material than one book could comfortably hold, and the pieces ranged from very simple read-aloud poems to stories written for much more confident readers.
One book was becoming four
Volume 2 — A Natural Divide
Once I stopped trying to make everything fit into a single book, the solution became fairly obvious.
The stories naturally sorted themselves.
Some belonged with the youngest readers. Others used a little more language, offered a little more story, and expected a little more from the child reading them.
Instead of deciding what to leave out, I could let the collection grow with its readers.
Volume 3 — Growing With the Reader
By the third group, something else had become apparent.
This wasn't simply a large collection divided into smaller books. Each volume represented another step in a young reader's development.
The language could become richer. The stories could become more involved. The humor could become a little more subtle.
The books could grow right alongside the children reading them.
Volume 4 — Finding the Right Home
The final group contained pieces that simply didn't belong in a book intended for beginning readers.
They asked a little more of the reader, whether through vocabulary, story, humor, or ideas.
Giving them their own volume meant I didn't have to simplify them to make them fit somewhere they didn't belong.
What began as the problem of having too many stories for one book became the organizing idea for the entire collection: four volumes, each giving its stories, and its readers, the right place to belong.
